HONALEE
HUNTER
My name is Honalee Hunter, and I have a private counselling practice in Sumner, Christchurch, my home town.

My work integrates aspects of talking therapy, somatic body based therapy, life coaching, and Psychosynthesis counselling/psychotherapy.

I’m passionate about my work, I find it deeply fulfilling and uplifting.
I have 20 years experience working with clients of varying ages, including many children with anxiety and trauma following the Christchurch Earthquakes and the mosque shootings.

I have experienced supporting clients in many areas, including sexuality, eating disorders, anxiety, phobias, grief, depression, life transitions, meaning, purpose and values, connection with self and others, and spirituality.

It is my intention to work with optimism, humour, gentleness and joy, providing a holistic approach to healing.

My approach is integrative. This means that I use different theories depending on what will best meet the needs of my clients. I draw on the main psychotherapy traditions, including:
Psychodynamic - which recognises the importance of the early years and people’s formative relationships;
Humanistic - helping clients recognise their strength and creativity;

Body-based - looking at the physical basis of emotion, experience, growth and change, including what neuroscience and attachment studies have currently shown;

Transpersonal - addressing spiritual concerns and questions of existence.

Fundamentally, my work is grounded in the person-centred approach: A talking therapy that puts you, the client, at the centre of the counselling relationship.

A solid evidence based practice means I have specific training to guide you through how to manage hard emotions and situations in a safe professional and effective way.

Feel free to call for a chat or to come for a one off session to get a feel of how it could be.

Where to start
I generally work face-to-face, but also offer online via Zoom or Skype.
I work with children, adolescents, adults and couples, either in short term, long term or occasionally one off sessions.

After an initial telephone or e-mail contact, a first meeting or assessment will be arranged where the main concerns and issues of the clients will be discussed and mutual suitability will be assessed.
It is very important that both parties are happy to work with each other as a great part of the success of the therapy will rest on the relationship built between therapist and client.

During this first meeting, a contract will also be discussed addressing issues as wide ranging as confidentiality, risk assessment, holidays, cancellations, meeting times, fees, etc.
What to expect
I believe you're the best authority in knowing and choosing the areas of your life we will explore during our sessions. As your therapist, my role is to be alongside you and to actively create a safe space where I can support and facilitate your explorations.
What comes up in the here and now is what we explore; it is from here that the journey unfolds. It is a gentle process. It takes time to connect with all aspects of ourselves. I am respectful of your pace and your need for emotional safety.
The relationship we form and the sense of connection you may feel are significant aspects of our work together. We can look at what’s causing distress and work together to enable you to process your difficulties, thereby helping you to find a way through them. Through this exploration, you may become more attuned to yourself and develop a greater awareness of your capabilities.
MY PHILOSOPHY ON COUNSELLING AND THERAPY

Counselling is a gentle process that helps restore our sense of harmony and balance amidst the changes and setbacks that accompany life experience.

It provides a space for emotional safety where we are free to be ourselves, without conditions and without fear of being judged.

Therapy helps us draw on inner resources to achieve the peace and contentment that are our birthright.
The choice to enter counselling can reflect a life-affirming impulse, a search for meaning or purpose and can often deepen your sense of identity.

Nurturing a sense of completeness within the self and a connection to a larger whole, is vital in order to experience a sense of belonging and inner peace.
WHAT IS PSYCHOSYNTHESIS?
Individuals seeking therapy to learn about themselves or feel more connected with their environment may benefit from psychosynthesis based counseling, as may those of us challenged with the major changes happening to the planet at this time, environmental and sustainability concerns, grief and adjustment.

At a basic level, psychosynthesis is a type of talk therapy.

Like psychotherapy, it involves focus on introspection and exploration of the unconscious. This is highly encouraged in psychosynthesis, as it allows a person to consciously explore various aspects of the self in order to increase insight and allow for growth and development. Guided imagery, symbolic artwork, and journaling may all be used.

Other techniques that can be used in psychosynthesis include meditation, gestalt techniques and encouraging creativity.

The first step in psychosynthesis is the acquisition of self-knowledge and the ability to move within our inner world with ease and confidence.
For this to happen, we must first enter into relationship with those feelings, thoughts and memories that society tends to alienate us from.
We can then contact aspects of ourselves we’ve repressed because we found them too painful to experience, or because they conflict with the conscious image we have of ourselves, or with the dominant cultural norms.
